Sustenance Festival 2017 Call for Proposals

Grandview Woodland Food Connection and the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC are partnering to host Sukkot this year! This will be part of the city-wide Sustenance Festival 2017.

Sukkot is a Jewish harvest celebration that “expresses universal themes of harvest celebration, cultural identity, human vulnerability, and community building.” It’s got a special place in my heart, as a weaver, because a woven shelter is central to its observance. Something I like about the Sukkot they’re planning is that it will include both Jewish and Coast Salish-led ceremonies, “in the spirit of cross-cultural sharing, learning, and reconciliation…”

As part of the festival, they’ve put out a call for proposals to artists and community groups to create the sukkah — the shelter that is central to the observance. This is usually woven of natural materials, and is meant to be a shade cover through which one can still see the stars at night (so… not rain proof…). They include this link to a competition for the creation of contemporary sukkah, to get your creative juices flowing…
