West Kootenay Fibre Investigation Series
As Jaymie gets reacquainted with the land and plants of her hometown, she invites you to join her in the investigation of seasonal fibre resources in the West Kootenays backyards and gardens.
The focus of this series will be on the creative re-use of green-waste and materials close at hand that would otherwise be overlooked such as those pulled from gardens, trimmed from bushes and trees, or mowed from fields and lawns.
5 sessions, every other Saturday morning throughout the Summer – join for one or all.
For this introductory offering of EartHand programming in the Kootenays, Jaymie will share tips and notes from her own on-going backyard fibre investigations at each session, as well as provide information as-needed about testing for strength and flexibility, harvesting, storing, and processing plant fibres for creative use.
The sessions will provide opportunity for participants to share their own investigations and connect with each other virtually while practicing and troubleshooting the basic hand technologies of rope-making and braiding.
Resources and Preparation
Jaymie asks that participants check out EartHand’s resources on rope-making and other hand skills (as interested) to become acquainted with and/or begin practicing these skills prior to attending the group sessions. This is ideal but not mandatory.
Participants will benefit from coming to each session with materials ready to use. Dried plant fibre can be “mellowed” by wrapping in a damp towel for 10ish minutes to prepare for use.
Late spring fibre suggestion: Dandelion stems.
Additional Information
This virtual series will be hosted via Zoom out of Nelson, BC on the traditional territories of the Sinixt peoples. The series is ideal for people who are also based in this region, but is open to anyone East of the Lower Mainland.
