A spinning and wild fibre processing intensive geared towards beginners – or those wanting to further develop their hand skills for spinning with plant fibres. This program is a prerequisite option for the Spinners Social Circle if you are new to spinning.
This full day will provide a wide survey of plant and fibre understanding applicable to flax, nettles, dogbane, and other fibre plants.
Focusing primarily on nettles, participants will go through the full steps of harvest and stripping stalks, discuss steps for retting fibres, and finally work with previously retted nettles to strip fibres, card and spin. A brief introduction to blending short fibres with wool, or other fibres such as seed fluff, will round out a participant’s understanding of plant fibre possibilities and ensure respect for the full plant’s offerings.
Outside under cover, dress for the weather, bring a spare clothing layer and your own lunch. Hot tea, all tools and supplies will be provided.
Participants can take a small bundle of nettles home to explore retting and continue processing.
