4 virtual sessions: Feb 9, 23, Mar 9, 30
An introduction to soft basket weaving, this guild will provide new weavers with the basic skills required to complete a small basket project using flexible found materials. Techniques covered will include plain weave, twining, shaping, and rim and finishing options. Each session will provide participants with a successive technical skill to move from base, to walls, to rim, with additional time for sharing questions and successes with the group. Depending on the speed you work, you may make or start several projects throughout the guild or do less weaving between sessions and complete one small basket.
Note: this guild is designed for those with no prior basket weaving experience and is a prerequisite for those without experience to attend future soft basket weaving guilds with EartHand this year.
To practice basic weaving skills we will be using household materials (paper, plastic, yarn, fabric scraps etc) and will not be harvesting or using plants for this series.
Materials List:
- Some combination of reused household materials: soft plastic bags, newspaper, cardboard, felt, fabric scraps, and/or yarn.
- Small jar or bottle for a weaving form
- Scissors
- Elastics
- Clothes pins or bulldog clips
- Darning needle (useful but optional)
As a virtual series, Zoom and camera capability is required to participate.
This is a paid guild with tiered pay-as-you-can tickets:
$72 – Sponsored Placement (SP)
$87 – Volunteer Supported (VS)
$102 – Community Patron (CP)
Subsidized spaces in this program are available thanks to the generous donations of EartHand community members. For more information about our pricing scale see this blog post.
