Virtual Program ( on Zoom)

Host: Sharon Kallis

It’s time to deep dive into Sprang! EartHand has been the lucky recipient of several sprang weaving frames and Sharon is keen to lead the charge on a learning circle.

In the 1980’’s Mary Frame wrote her Masters thesis on Ancient Peruvian Sprang Fabrics at UBC and went on to teach sprang for many years, she has now passed her tools along to EartHand.

Sprang is a Scandinavian word meaning open work textile, but sprang  is a technique for twining and plaiting multiple threads under tension to create an elastic-like netting that appears in many cultural string technologies around the world.

Are you curious to learn a new technique in a group with others online?

Community accountability and the power of many brains will aid us all to get further along in our learning then we would independently while giving us a space to  share our  string stories and helpful resource links we find along the way.

An optional slack group can help hold questions and links between  group sessions.

Lower mainland residents will have an opportunity to borrow a frame and crochet needles for the program. Others are welcome to gather their own tools and join in.

Sharon will share illustrated instructions  and begin the process of mentally untangling the basic  method before the first session. Depending on the group, various materials  and patterns may be explored

Material needs:

Device with camera and microphone for zoom, a printer to print out instructions will be helpful,  and provide your own threads- cotton string or yarn recommended to start but experiments with nettles and other fibres is encouraged for the bold and adventurous.

Tool requirements: sprang frame, crochet hook(s) chopstick, scissors

note: the picture here is for illustrative purpose of showing a knitted string pattern- it is not sprang- but knit lace by Marion Davies,  Sharon’s grandmother.
