Friday 6-8.30pm, Saturday and Sunday 10.30am-4pm

Co-lead by Catherine Langevin and Sharon Kallis

A weekend intensive exploration of basketry and materials.

Participants can expect to end the weekend with a new finished woven form and a wealth of experience in learning about local plants for basketry and new – or newly remembered – techniques embedded in their fingertips.

Combining traditional basketry willow weaving methods with a variety of other plant materials grown at both Means of Production garden and Trillium park. The group can take breaks to stroll the garden paths at Trillium, refill tea cups and keep on weaving.

A potluck dinner on Friday evening helps us set group intentions and get to know each other, so come Saturday we step directly into our weaving work in a good way.

No experience is required in basketry, but does help! Know that willow work is hard hand-work, those with arthritis or unaccustomed to  hand work will  want to choose some of the softer fibres offered, or focus on smaller forms requiring less consistent hand strength.

Weekend Expectations:

Friday evening – potluck, introduction to materials and setting intentions

Saturday  Splitting rods, basket starts and woven bases ( bring your own lunch)

Sunday  Materials exploration for weaving sides and walls, short rows and finishes ( bring your own lunch)

Weaving techniques that may be covered include:

Three Rod Wale, Single/Double French randing, “Criss-cross” and twining

Materials that may be explored include various willow varieties, ash and hazel, hops, phormium tenax, various fruit wood whips and  a variety of soft basketry plants harvested in 2022

The program is outside, undercover as required. Please dress for the weather and bring extra layers or sun hat as the forecast advises.

Tea will be made for each session, participants provide their own lunch for both full days and bring something to share for the Friday evening. All tools and materials provided.
